travestito

person in disguise; transvestite

noun trah-veh-STEE-toh Rare

Usage Note

Travestito is the past participle of travestire (to disguise, to dress up) used as a noun. It can neutrally describe someone in costume at Carnival (un travestito da vampiro) but more commonly refers to a cross-dresser or transvestite; the register depends on context. As an adjective it simply means 'disguised': è travestito da pirata (he is dressed as a pirate). Plural: i travestiti.

Examples

"Al carnevale era travestito da fantasma."

Natural Translation

At carnival he was dressed up as a ghost.
