Usage Note
Sottofondo literally means 'under-ground' and refers to a background layer — most commonly musica di sottofondo (background music) or sottofondo sonoro (sound backdrop). In construction it also denotes the subfloor or foundation layer beneath a finished surface. The plural is regular: i sottofondi.
