sorgente

spring, source

noun sor-JEN-teh Rare

Origin: From Latin surgens, present participle of surgere, 'to rise up'.

Also means

source (computing)

Usage Note

Sorgente is feminine — la sorgente. It refers to a natural spring of water (una sorgente d'acqua pura — 'a spring of pure water') and, in computing, to source code (codice sorgente). As an adjective it is invariable: acqua sorgente ('spring water'). Not to be confused with fonte, which also means 'source' but is more broadly used for non-physical sources.

Examples

"L'acqua di questa sorgente è purissima."

Natural Translation

The water from this spring is very pure.
