smarrire

to lose, to misplace

verb zmahr-REE-reh Rare

Also means

to go astray

Usage Note

Smarrire implies losing something through carelessness or disorientation, stronger than the generic perdere (to lose). The reflexive smarrirsi means to get lost or to feel confused: mi sono smarrito nel bosco — I got lost in the woods. It takes avere as auxiliary in compound tenses.

Examples

"Ho smarrito il passaporto in aeroporto."

Natural Translation

I lost my passport at the airport.
