Usage Note

Sfuggire can be intransitive (è sfuggito alla polizia = he escaped from the police) or used with an indirect object (mi è sfuggito il nome = the name escaped me / slipped my mind). It conjugates with essere when intransitive and the participle agrees with the subject. The idiom sfuggire di mano means to get out of hand.
