Scala covers both a staircase and an abstract scale, as in una scala da uno a dieci ('a scale from one to ten'). The plural scale often means a whole flight of stairs, while scala mobile is an escalator and scala a pioli a ladder. Milan's famous opera house is simply La Scala.
