rimpinguare

to top up

verb reem-peen-GWAH-reh Rare

Origin: From ri- (re-) + impinguare (to fatten), from Latin pinguis (fat).

Also means

to replenish

Usage Note

Rimpinguare literally means to fatten again, but in modern usage it nearly always means to replenish or top up a fund, account, or resource: rimpinguare le casse dello Stato (to replenish state coffers). It takes avere as the auxiliary. The register is formal to journalistic; avoid it in casual speech.

Examples

"Il governo vuole rimpinguare le riserve."

Natural Translation

The government wants to replenish the reserves.
