rigetto

rejection

noun ree-JET-toh Rare

Also means

refusal

Usage Note

Rigetto has a primarily legal and medical register. In law, il rigetto del ricorso means 'the dismissal of the appeal'. In medicine, il rigetto del trapianto means 'transplant rejection'. For the everyday sense of personal rejection (of a person, a proposal), Italians more often use rifiuto. The underlying verb is rigettare ('to reject / to vomit'), with vomitare preferred in the literal sense.

Examples

"Il corpo ha subito un rigetto del trapianto."

Natural Translation

The body suffered a transplant rejection.
