Usage Note

Restare takes essere as its auxiliary: sono restato a casa = 'I stayed home.' It is largely interchangeable with rimanere, though restare is more colloquial in the spoken register. The expression restare senza parole (to be left speechless) is idiomatic. Restare can also express a resulting state: resto convinto = 'I remain convinced.'
