raffrontare
to compare; to confront
verb rahf-fron-TAH-reh Rare
Origin: From ri- (again) + affrontare (to face/confront), from Latin 'ad-' + 'frons' (forehead)
Usage Note
Raffrontare takes avere as its auxiliary and is a formal synonym of confrontare — used mainly in academic, legal, and official writing to mean 'to compare two things side by side'. In ordinary speech, confrontare is far more common. Raffrontare is preferred in legal texts when comparing clauses or versions of a document (raffrontare i testi).
Examples
"Il documento raffrontava le due versioni del contratto."
Natural Translation
The document compared the two versions of the contract.
