Also means
to punctuate, to score
Usage Note
Punteggiare covers three senses: to dot or speckle a surface (cielo punteggiato di stelle — 'sky dotted with stars'), to punctuate a text with marks, and in sports to score points. The reflexive/passive punteggiato ('dotted, specked') is very common as an adjective. Note the spelling: 'gg' before 'i' is pronounced as a single 'j' sound (poon-teh-JAH-reh). Regular first-conjugation verb.
Examples
"Il cielo era punteggiato di stelle luminose."
Natural Translation
The sky was dotted with bright stars.
