previdenza
social security, welfare provision
noun preh-vee-DEN-tsah Rare
Origin: Latin providentia, 'foresight'

foresight, prudence
Usage Note
Previdenza in modern Italian almost always refers to the social-security or pension system — previdenza sociale is the Italian welfare/social-security system, and previdenza complementare is supplementary pension provision. The older literal sense of 'foresight' still exists but is rare. Do not confuse with prevenzione (prevention) or provvidenza (providence/divine care).
