adjective poh-TAH-bee-leh Rare

Origin: Latin potabilis, from potare 'to drink'

Usage Note

Potabile is used almost exclusively in the fixed phrase acqua potabile (drinking water / potable water). It is an epicene adjective: acqua potabile (f), liquido potabile (m). The opposite is non potabile ('not safe to drink'), seen on signs near non-drinking fountains in Italy. Do not confuse with portabile (portable).
