Plankton is invariable in Italian (no separate plural form). It is a collective noun referring to the mass of tiny organisms drifting in water. Grammatically it is masculine: il plankton. It is subdivided into fitoplancton (phytoplankton) and zooplancton (zooplankton) in scientific Italian.
