pizza
pizza
noun PEET-tsah Rare
Origin: Possibly from Lombardic bizzo (bite); attested in Naples from the 10th century
Usage Note
Pizza needs no translation, but learners should know la pizza is feminine. Ordering by the slice is al taglio; a whole round pizza is una pizza intera. The plural le pizze is regular. Avoid pronouncing it 'peet-za' — the double z gives a held 'ts' sound.
Examples
"Stasera mangiamo una pizza napoletana."
Natural Translation
Tonight we're eating a Neapolitan pizza.
