partire

to leave, to depart

verb par-TEE-reh Common

Also means

to set off

Usage Note

Partire always takes essere: 'siamo partiti alle otto' (we left at eight). It contrasts with lasciare, which means 'to leave something/someone behind.' Partire da zero (to start from scratch) is a common idiom. The opposite is arrivare (to arrive).

Examples

Natural Translation

The train leaves at nine.
