Papavero refers to the common poppy (Papaver rhoeas), the red wildflower of fields and roadsides. Papavero da oppio is the opium poppy. The plural is regular: papaveri. In informal speech, un papavero can also mean a bigwig or VIP — a colloquial sense worth noting.
