oscillare

to oscillate

verb oh-sheel-LAH-reh Less Common

Also means

to swing

Usage Note

Oscillare takes avere as its auxiliary (ha oscillato). It is used literally for a pendulum (il pendolo oscilla) and figuratively for prices, opinions, or moods that fluctuate — i prezzi oscillano tra dieci e venti euro. Do not confuse with scivolare (to slide/slip).

Examples

"Il pendolo oscilla regolarmente."

Natural Translation

The pendulum swings regularly.
