Oscar (Academy Award)

noun OH-skahr Rare

Usage Note

Oscar is used in Italian as an invariable masculine noun: gli Oscar (the Oscars), ha vinto l'Oscar (he won the Oscar). It is a proper noun used generically for the Academy Award statuette and, by extension, for any 'best of' prize. The plural takes the definite article gli because it begins with a vowel.

Examples

"Il film ha vinto tre Oscar quella sera."

Natural Translation

The film won three Oscars that evening.
