orizzonte

horizon

noun oh-ree-DZOHN-teh Less Common

Origin: Greek horizōn (bounding, limiting)

Usage Note

Orizzonte is masculine despite ending in -e: l'orizzonte (not la). In Italian it is used both literally ('la linea dell'orizzonte', the horizon line) and figuratively for future prospects or one's field of vision: 'aprire nuovi orizzonti' (to open new horizons). The plural orizzonti is regular. The adjective orizzontale (horizontal) shares the same root.

Examples

"Il sole tramontava sull'orizzonte."

Natural Translation

The sun was setting on the horizon.
