nessuno

nobody

pronoun nehs-SOO-noh Common

Origin: from Latin 'ne ipse unus'

Also means

none

Usage Note

Nessuno triggers Italian's double negative: after the verb it needs non before it, as in non c'è nessuno ('there's nobody'). Placed before the verb it stands alone, and as an adjective it shortens to nessun before a masculine noun.

Examples

"Non c'è nessuno in casa."

Natural Translation

There's nobody home.

Literal Translation

Not there-is nobody in house.
