morte

death

noun MOR-teh Common

Origin: Latin mors, mortis (death)

Usage Note

Morte is feminine despite ending in -e, a pattern shared by many Italian nouns. The adjective mortale means 'mortal' or 'deadly'; la pena di morte is 'the death penalty'. Don't confuse morte with morto/morta (the past participle of morire, used as an adjective meaning 'dead').

Examples

"La morte di quel personaggio ha commosso tutti."

Natural Translation

The death of that character moved everyone.
