metropolitana

underground

noun meh-troh-poh-lee-TAH-nah Rare

Origin: From French métropolitain.

Also means

subway

Usage Note

La metropolitana is the full form; Italians shorten it to la metro in everyday speech. It is feminine and the plural is le metropolitane. Rome's metro has only three lines (A, B, C) because archaeological finds constantly halt excavation — a well-known cultural fact. Do not confuse with metropolitano (adjective: 'metropolitan').

Examples

"Prendo la metropolitana ogni mattina."

Natural Translation

I take the underground every morning.
