Usage Note

Lastricare means to lay flat stones (lastre) to create a paved surface — used for roads, squares, and floors: lastricare una piazza ('to pave a square'). The past participle lastricato is also commonly used as a noun or adjective: un lastricato ('a pavement'), una strada lastricata ('a cobblestone street'). The proverb la strada per l'inferno è lastricata di buone intenzioni ('the road to hell is paved with good intentions') is well known.
