Usage Note

Ingrossare means to make or become larger, thicker, or swollen — ingrossare un file (to inflate a file size) or il fiume si ingrossava (the river was swelling). Used reflexively (ingrossarsi) it is intransitive and takes essere; used transitively it takes avere. It can also describe a crowd growing: la folla si è ingrossata (the crowd swelled).
