inghiottire

to swallow

verb een-gyoht-TEE-reh Rare

Also means

to engulf

Usage Note

Inghiottire is conjugated like a regular -ire verb but takes the -isc- infix: inghiottisco, inghiottisci… in the present. Figuratively it means to swallow an insult without reacting (inghiottire un rospo = to swallow a toad = to put up with something unpleasant). It takes avere as auxiliary.

Examples

"Ha inghiottito la pillola con un sorso d'acqua."

Natural Translation

He swallowed the pill with a sip of water.
