inferire
to infer
verb een-feh-REE-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin 'inferre' (to bring in, to inflict), from 'in-' + 'ferre' (to carry).
Also means
to inflict
Usage Note
Inferire has two distinct meanings that are worth keeping separate: (1) to infer or deduce logically (inferire una conclusione da un dato = to infer a conclusion from data), and (2) to inflict (inferire un colpo = to deal a blow). The first sense is the more common in modern Italian. It is an -ire verb conjugated with the -isc- infix: inferisco, inferisci, inferisce. Auxiliary: avere.
