impiegare

employ

verb eem-pyeh-GAH-reh Less Common

Origin: from Latin implicare

Also means

take time

Usage Note

Impiegare means to employ a worker or to use resources, but very commonly means 'to take time': ci impiego un'ora ('it takes me an hour'). It is regular -are but inserts an h in spelling like impieghiamo to keep the hard g. The reflexive impiegarsi means 'to get a job'.

Examples

"Impiego venti minuti per arrivare."

Natural Translation

It takes me twenty minutes to get there.

Literal Translation

I-employ twenty minutes for to-arrive.
