impedimento

impediment, obstacle

noun eem-peh-dee-MEN-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin impedimentum, from impedire (to shackle the feet).

Also means

hindrance

Usage Note

Impedimento appears in formal, legal, and ecclesiastical language (impedimento matrimoniale — an impediment to marriage in canon law). In everyday speech ostacolo is more common for a physical obstacle. The plural impedimenti is used; in military Latin impedimenta meant baggage, but this sense is archaic in Italian.

Examples

"Non ci sono impedimenti legali al progetto."

Natural Translation

There are no legal impediments to the project.
