impazzire

to go crazy

verb eem-paht-TSEE-reh Rare

Also means

to go mad

Usage Note

Impazzire takes essere as its auxiliary (è impazzito = he went crazy). Beyond its literal psychiatric sense, it is widely used idiomatically: impazzire per qualcuno means to be crazy about someone, and far impazzire means to drive someone mad. In cooking, la maionese è impazzita means the mayonnaise has broken (separated).

Examples

"Quel rumore mi fa impazzire."

Natural Translation

That noise is driving me crazy.

Literal Translation

That noise me makes to-go-crazy.
