immergere

to immerse

verb eem-MER-jeh-reh Rare

Origin: From Latin immergere, from in- + mergere (to dip).

Also means

to plunge

Usage Note

Immergere takes avere as its auxiliary; the reflexive immergersi takes essere and can be used both literally (to dive into water) and figuratively (immergersi nel lavoro — 'to immerse oneself in work'). It is an irregular verb in the past participle: immerso (not immerguto). Do not confuse with emergere (to emerge), its opposite.

Examples

"Ha immerso la mano nell'acqua fredda."

Natural Translation

He immersed his hand in the cold water.

Literal Translation

He-has immersed the hand in-the water cold.
