Illuminato is the past participle of illuminare ('to light up') used as an adjective. Figuratively it describes a ruler, thinker, or policy seen as enlightened and forward-thinking — un sovrano illuminato ('an enlightened sovereign'). In art history, L'Illuminismo is the Italian term for the Enlightenment. Literally, it also simply means 'lit up': la stanza è ben illuminata ('the room is well lit').
