hardware

hardware

noun AHR-dwehr Rare

Origin: English loanword.

Usage Note

Hardware is used unchanged in Italian to mean computer hardware. It is masculine (l'hardware, il componente hardware) and invariable in the plural. The contrasting term is software (also m, invariable). In non-IT contexts, Italian speakers occasionally use ferramenta for hardware in the sense of tools and fittings, but for computers hardware is the only term.

Examples

"Il problema è dell'hardware, non del software."

Natural Translation

The problem is with the hardware, not the software.
