gola

throat

noun GOH-lah Rare

Origin: Latin gula (throat, gullet)

Also means

gorge, gullet

Usage Note

Gola means the throat as a body part (ho mal di gola, I have a sore throat) and also a mountain gorge or narrow passage (la gola del canyon). It is also the old Italian word for gluttony (gola was one of the seven deadly sins), so fare gola means 'to tempt' or 'to make one's mouth water' — a useful idiom. Regular feminine plural: gole.

Examples

"Ho mal di gola da ieri."

Natural Translation

I have had a sore throat since yesterday.
