fermo

still

adjective FEHR-moh Less Common

Origin: from Latin 'firmus', firm

Also means

firm

Usage Note

Fermo describes something motionless or stationary, and as an interjection fermo! means 'stop! / halt!'. Note the false friend: it does not mean 'farm'; the fixed phrase fermo restando che introduces a proviso ('it being understood that').

Examples

"Il treno è fermo in stazione."

Natural Translation

The train is stopped at the station.

Literal Translation

The train is still in station.
