faggio

beech tree

noun FAHD-joh Rare

Origin: From Latin 'fagus'.

Also means

beech wood

Usage Note

Faggio refers to the common beech (Fagus sylvatica), widespread in Italian mountain forests. The wood (il legno di faggio) is valued for furniture and flooring. The plural is regular: i faggi. Beech forests are called faggete (f pl). Note that faggio has double 'g' — pronunciation: the 'gg' before 'i' gives the 'dj' sound: FAHD-joh.

Examples

"Il bosco era pieno di faggi e castagni."

Natural Translation

The wood was full of beech trees and chestnut trees.
