Esattoria referred to the local office responsible for collecting direct taxes in Italy, a system abolished in the 1970s when tax collection was centralised. The word is now largely historical or bureaucratic, replaced by Agenzia delle Entrate for modern tax administration. The plural is regular: esattorie.
