epopea

epic

noun eh-poh-PEH-ah Rare

Origin: Greek epopoiia (epic poem)

Also means

saga

Usage Note

Epopea refers to an epic narrative or saga — both the literary genre (l'epopea omerica = the Homeric epic) and, figuratively, any long heroic enterprise (la nostra epopea alpinistica). It is feminine and its plural is epopee. Do not confuse it with epico (the adjective 'epic') or poema epico (epic poem); epopea is the noun for the genre or a sweeping story.

Examples

"L'Iliade è una grande epopea."

Natural Translation

The Iliad is a great epic.
