dovere
to have to; must
verb doh-VEH-reh Common
Origin: Latin debere (to owe, be obliged)

Usage Note
Dovere is a modal verb expressing obligation or duty; it is always followed by an infinitive — devo partire (I must leave). Like potere, it borrows its auxiliary from the infinitive that follows: sono dovuto partire (I had to leave). It also means 'to owe' when used with a direct object: ti devo venti euro (I owe you twenty euros).
