Usage Note
Dormiente is the present participle of dormire used as an adjective. It is invariable for gender but adds -i in the plural. It appears in both literal contexts (il bambino dormiente — 'the sleeping child') and figurative ones (un vulcano dormiente — 'a dormant volcano'). The fairy-tale La Bella Addormentata uses addormentata (fallen asleep), not dormiente.
Examples
"Il vulcano è rimasto dormiente per secoli."
Natural Translation
The volcano remained dormant for centuries.
