Detto is the past participle of dire used attributively to mean 'so-called' or 'the said/aforementioned' in legal and formal writing (e.g. il detto contratto = 'the said contract'). In everyday speech it also means 'said' as in 'no sooner said than done': detto fatto. It can also introduce a nickname: Marco, detto il Rosso.
