Usage Note
Degenza specifically refers to the period of staying in hospital (or a care facility) for treatment, not illness in general. Essere in degenza means to be hospitalised. It differs from ricovero (admission/hospitalisation as an event) in that degenza emphasises the duration of the stay. The adjective degente means a hospitalised patient.
Examples
"La degenza in ospedale è durata due settimane."
Natural Translation
The hospital stay lasted two weeks.
