Usage Note
Cratere is a masculine noun whose plural is i crateri. It describes the circular depression at the top of a volcano (il cratere del Vesuvio), an impact crater on a planetary surface, or metaphorically a large hole created by an explosion. In ancient usage cratere also meant a large bowl for mixing wine.
