Usage Note

Colono historically means both a farmer who works rented land (sharecropper) and a colonial settler. The feminine form is colona. In a legal-historical context colono refers to the sharecropping system (mezzadria) once widespread in Italy. In modern political discourse it more often means 'colonist/settler' in an overseas territory.
