catasto
land registry
noun kah-TAHS-toh Rare
Origin: From Medieval Greek 'katastikhon' (register), via Venetian 'catastico'.
Also means
cadastre
Usage Note
Catasto is the official Italian land and property registry, maintained by the Agenzia delle Entrate. Every Italian property has a codice catastale (cadastral code). The adjective is catastale: la rendita catastale (cadastral income) is used to calculate property taxes. A false friend: do not confuse with catastrofe (catastrophe).
Examples
"Ho consultato il catasto per conoscere la proprietà."
Natural Translation
I consulted the land registry to find out about the property.
