catasta

pile

noun kah-TAH-stah Rare

Also means

stack; heap

Usage Note

Catasta refers to a large, orderly or disorderly pile of objects — most traditionally a stack of firewood (catasta di legna). It is also used metaphorically for a large accumulation of things. Do not confuse with catasto (land registry), which is unrelated despite the similarity.

Examples

"C'era una catasta di legna davanti al camino."

Natural Translation

There was a pile of firewood in front of the fireplace.
