Usage Note

Aviatore specifically evokes a military or historical pilot — the Italian Air Force is l'Aviazione Militare. For a civilian airline pilot the more common modern term is pilota. The feminine form is aviatrice, following the standard -tore/-trice pattern. In a historical or poetic context aviatore carries a romantic, pioneering connotation.
