assistere

assist

verb ahs-SEES-teh-reh Less Common

Origin: from Latin assistere

Also means

attend

Usage Note

Assistere splits by preposition: assistere qualcuno means 'to help', but assistere a something means 'to witness or attend' it. So assistere a una partita is 'to watch a match', not to assist in it, a classic false-friend trap.

Examples

"Abbiamo assistito allo spettacolo."

Natural Translation

We attended the show.

Literal Translation

We-have attended to-the show.
