archivio

archive; file

noun ar-KEE-vyoh Less Common

Origin: Medieval Latin archivum, from Greek arkheion (public records office)

Usage Note

Archivio covers both a physical archive (l'archivio di stato — the state archive) and a digital file or folder (salva il documento nell'archivio). In computing it corresponds to English 'archive' or simply 'file.' The plural archivi is regular. The verb is archiviare (to archive/file), and archiviare un caso colloquially means 'to close a case.'

Natural Translation

The document is preserved in the historical archive.
