Usage Note

Analfabetismo denotes the inability to read and write (analfabeta = illiterate person). The term analfabetismo funzionale (functional illiteracy) is widely used in Italian policy debate. The adjective/noun analfabeta is invariable in the singular: un analfabeta / una analfabeta.
